(PS3) Little Big Planet 2 Review

Just a graphic I put together showcasing some, not all, of the cool things about LBP 2.

When you think of a game that grants the player the ability to do what they want, you are thinking of Little Big Planet 2. With over 30 story mode levels, over one million community levels, and the ability granted to the player to do whatever they want to, Little Big Planet 2 is a great investment considering the potential that you acquire with the purchase of one game. This game is a must have for anyone, and everyone who owns a Playstation 3.

What can I expect when I first launch my copy of Little Big Planet 2?

When you launch your copy of Little Big Planet 2 on you PS3 for the first time you are given the option to transfer all of your content from the original Little Big Planet, provided you are logged into the account that you used to play Little Big Planet. This feature enables all of your content from LBP 1 to be used in LBP 2. This was a great feature provided by Media Molecule that I have found of extreme vital importance. However, if you have never played the original Little Big Planet, ignore the previous statements. After the above process has been completed you will be launched directly into the game's introduction level. What is the introduction level? The introduction level is basically the opening credits for the game, but instead of it being just boring text, you can play through the level.

What is the overall plot of the Little Big Planet 2 story mode?

The plot of the Little Big Planet 2 story mode can be simply stated. Basically a vacuum cleaner, or "Negativitron" as the inhabitants of Little Big Planet call it, is sucking up all of Little Big Planet. With this opposing force arriving into the Little Big Planet Universe it is up to you as "Sackthing" to stop the menacing Negativitron before it completely swallows the entirety of Little Big Planet. Along your journey you will have the pleasure of meeting a variety of characters that will aid you in your quest to save Little Big Planet. Little Big Planet 2 is packed with 6 story mode worlds consisting of multiple levels for you to traverse. Through out your story mode journey in Little Big Planet 2 you will come across a large quantity of prize bubbles filled with an assortment of objects for use in Create Mode, costumes to give your Sack a unique swagga', and stickers to be placed on anything, and everything. Combine all of this with the fun of playing cooperatively and you have yourself a game that will bring you endless joy and challenge.

What makes Little Big Planet 2's story mode different from the original's is the vast amount of new gadgets and gizmos to aid you along you quest to free Little Big Planet from the Negativitron's grasp. Gadgets include the Creatinator which is a helmet that you can use to emit objects such as cakes. Another cool object provided in Little Big Planet 2 by Media Molecule is the Grappling Hook which does exactly what you would think it would. The Grappling Hook can be used to grab onto to objects that you can grab (imagine that) and allows you to swing across large gaps to get you where you need to be. It does not end their though. There is still a whole truck load of cool abilities and gadgets available to you in Little Big Planet 2.

... And on to the awesomely cool Little Big Planet 2 Create Mode!

One of the best things about Little Big Planet 2 (trust me it is definitely not the only good thing about Little Big Planet 2) is the infamous Create Mode. The Little Big Planet feature is where it all is. In Create Mode you find yourself making your wildest dreams a reality. This is the place where you can make whatever you want to. Do you want to create a level re-enacting D-Day (the day that the United States forces stormed the beaches of Normandy in a desperate attempt to free France from Germany's grasp during World War II)? Do you want to build a racing level? With Little Big Planet 2 the possibilities are literally endless. Be warned though, if you loose track of time you will find yourself trapped in Create Mode for long periods of time, but hey it is worth it for the Trophy you get for dedicating your time and effort. Right? Probably not, but I can tell you that the place where I have the most fun in this game is Create Mode.

The Little Big Planet 2 Create Mode differs strongly from the Create Mode available in the original release of Little Big Planet. Major differences include:
  • Sackbots
  • Water without the purchase of the Pirates of the Carribean DLC Pack
  • New Switches and Sensors
  • Brand New Materials and Objects
  • Global Lighting and Global Audio Tweaking
  • Music Sequencer (Create your own Music)
  • and More...
Last, but not least, the Community that connects everything in Little Big Planet!

The Little Big Planet 2 community is one of the coolest features available in the game. Lets say you just finished building a level and want to share it to the world. All you would need to do is publish the level to the Little Big Planet servers and then your level can be played by anyone, and everyone in the world. There is a whole lot of cool community levels out there created by ordinary people like you and me. In fact, to this very day there is over 1 million community levels for you to play through. This is what makes Little Big Planet fun. You will find that some of the community levels are just horrible (like all of mine). Then you will find that most of the levels have absolute potential. Believe me when I say that when you jump into one of the "MM Picks" levels you will ask yourself out loud "How in the world did they do this?" My favorite of all of the community levels is a Star Wars: Jedi Arts level. In this level you get to actually wield a lightsaber and fend off against attacking Sith warriors. The Little Big Planet Community will give you everything you need to stay satisfied and keep from boredom in Little Big Planet.

What is my overall rating?

I believe that Little Big Planet 2 is an extremely awesome investment. For the price of a brand new game you get ten times, and counting, the amount you forked out of pocket for it. Is Little Big Planet 2 worth buying? For sure! LBP introduced me to a whole new world of creation. I am not going to say that Little Big Planet 2 is the best game known to man, because believe me it has problems of it's own, but it definitely possesses a certain quality of being unique. Thank you for taking the time to read this review (maybe it was more of a product description at some point, but you got the facts). I do hope that the information you learned reading this review informed you and moved you one step closer to buying, or not buying Little Big Planet 2.
